At CARE Canada, we love hearing from our donors – from Canadians like you. Whether you are sending us emails thanking us for our work, looking for more information on a project we are working on to fight poverty around the world, or asking us questions so that you can learn more about us, your emails, calls and letters are important to us. Below are three questions we receive on a regular basis and we’d like to share our answers with you.
Question 1
Why doesn’t CARE accept in-kind donations? Why only financial support?
In-kind donations of food, clothing, and other items, while well intentioned, are not the best way to help those in need. There are tremendous processing and transport costs involved in shipping these items to the families we work with every day around the world. CARE makes every effort to purchase its supplies in the regions where we are working, thereby reducing costs, supporting the local economy and also ensuring that these items are culturally appropriate.
By supporting CARE financially, you allow us the flexibility to purchase items based on urgent needs.
Question 2
Where does my financial donation go? How much of it goes toward fighting poverty?
Our work is powered by donations from generous Canadians. Thanks to donors like you, CARE reached more than 122 million women, men and children in 84 countries last year.
Your donation helps support poverty-fighting efforts such as:
- Safeguarding women’s health during pregnancy and childbirth
- Providing sustainable economic opportunities
- Working with communities to improve food security
- Supporting communities during humanitarian crises with life-saving help
CARE Canada is committed to keeping our support costs as low as possible. However there are some support costs that must be incurred, such as processing your donations safely and securely.
Though the actual percentages vary from year to year, our support costs average 11 per cent of our total expenditures. This means that for every $1 donated to CARE Canada, 89 cents goes directly to our mission to defend dignity and fight poverty around the world.
Question 3
I’m interested in working for CARE Canada. How do I apply for employment at CARE?
