A yoga relay? Having practiced yoga for six years now, I’ve heard of utkatasana (or chair pose), bakasana (or crane pose), and even dolphin pose – but a yoga relay? I had never heard of that, until this year when I was introduced to Yoga Aid. It ends up it’s not doing your entire repertoire of poses one after the other with a baton…
Yoga Aid is global yoga relay, now in its ninth year and growing in Canada. The way it works is that beginning in Sydney, Australia on September 9th, giant yoga classes, often outdoors with many teachers and music, will take place one after the other and cycle through 180+ event locations in 27 countries and end on the West coast of North America in Los Angeles and Vancouver on September 9th in that time zone. So, when one event is finished, the next one starts in the next community, and so on, until it has circled the globe. How cool is that?
It gets even better – each location is raising funds for charities – and CARE Canada has been chosen as one of the charities for the Canadian locations. The main event takes place in Ottawa, but Halifax, Mont Tremblant, Napanee, Oakville, London, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver will also hold a Yoga Aid event. There’s still time to register if you want to start a challenge in your community too! Even if you’ve never done yoga it’s a great way to gather your friends and family and come try it out.
Yoga Aid is easy to get involved with – registration is free and then you can easily raise funds for CARE Canada through you own Yoga Aid online fundraising page. Spread the word through Facebook and other social media and have your friends and family join you or support you with donations. You can get creative too! Maybe you’ll add on a challenge of doing a bit of yoga every day leading up to the big event and have people donate to you for the extra challenge, or see if you can hold a dress down day in the office for donations to your challenge. Offer to weed a neighbour’s garden or wash their car for a donation, or set up a lemonade/iced tea stand on a sunny day.
Yoga Aid is going to be an amazing event, bringing people together across the globe, for great causes in each community. So why not be a part of something bigger and help CARE Canada defend dignity and fight poverty by empowering women and girls. A little stretching and posing to raise funds can go a long way!
